Erectile Dysfunction

Introduction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence, occurs when a man has difficulty with either getting or keeping an erection long enough for satisfactory sexual activity. This problem affects about half of all men over 40 at some point and the chance of getting ED increases with age.

Can It Be Treated?

Treatment can be very effective and focuses on the following factors that cause Erectile Dysfunction:

Physical causes

Restriction of blood flow in to the penis can lead to ED. This is often a result of high blood pressure, diabetes, vascular disease and high cholesterol. Other causes include low testosterone levels and neurological disease.

Psychological causes

Many factors affecting the mood can reduce sexual arousal. Anxiety, fear, guilt, stress, depression, partner conflicts and boredom in the bedroom can all contribute to ED.

Drug side-effects

Many medicines can cause ED including those used to treat high blood pressure and depression. Other medicines may also affect sex drive (libido) and ejaculation.

Lifestyle causes

ED can often be brought on by patient lifestyle, including excess consumption of alcohol, smoking, lack of exercise and use of illicit drugs.
